HOTSPUR EDGE PORT IN CRACKER!
Campbell Harrisons Holyhead Hotspur side continued their recent run of excellent results with the best of the lot against his former club in an end to end thrilling encounter which was a credit to both clubs and the league. In the process Hotspur leap-frogged their Traeth opponents moving into fourth place via this off goal in five victory in a match played at a high tempo throughout and importantly in the right spirit. The first half was played at an unrelenting fast pace Hotspurs Mike Edwards giving a taster of what was to come as early as the first minute rattling the crossbar from a free kick. Which set the tone for the rest of the game. Like all his team-mates Edwards was a star turn throughout and set up Mike Kelly for his fine finish after 21 minutes only for it to be cancelled out a few minutes later by Stuart Rodgers deflected free kick. The rejuvenated Mel McGinness restored Hotspur lead four minutes before the interval latching on well to further Edwardss involvement.
In the second half the visitors made Hotspur work hard to hold on to their advantage but Ryan Jones scored an all-important third following a defence splitting Mel McGinness pass after 76 minutes and although Josh Davies reduced the lead the home team deservedly lead out for the three points and a great booster for next Saturdays Huws Gray Alliance League Cup Semi Final at Guilsfield.
Only one minute on the clock and Mike Edwards free kick from edge of area hit the crossbar and eventually cleared while minutes later Gareth Parry to Edwards who brought a smothering save from Richard Harvey. At the other end Dave Edwards on left saw Carl Jones save at expense of a corner. End to end Carl Jones good first away to clear from Stuart Rodger. Josh Hartrick prominent for Porthmadog and his pass lead to Josh Davies effort being saved by Jones. At the other end on 11 Mike Kelly just wide from Mel McGinness pass, good tempo to game and on 15 Alex Jones went low down to test Harvey from Gibbs corner. Hotspur into lead on 21 All due to Mike Edwards who intercepted a pass and did well to find Mike Kelly who chested down well and unleashed a super strike past Harvey. Three minutes later Porthmadog went level a free kick from 20+ yards by Stuart Rodgers deflected by the wall giving Jones no chance. Good contest Holyhead three man move Mike Edwards to Jay Gibbs to Mel McGinness who angled over on 30 minutes. Alex Jones good cut out on 34. On 38 Porthmadog missed great chance after ball from left reached Josh Banks who blazed wildly over.
The visitors were to rue the missed opportunity on 41 Mike Edwards delivered a fine ball up to Mel McGinness, who although under pressure managed to hook the ball past and around Harvey who had advanced. Just on half time Porthmadog Josh Standiki headed narrowly wide of the upright. HT 2-1.
Nip + Tuc for a while as game continued at fast pace with both sides fully committed and on hour Jay Gibbs to Gareth Parry who turned well in goalmouth but shot saved. Port began to put the hosts under heavy pressure but Holyheads defence holding out and Josh Davies almost capitalised in front of goal as Hotspur having to work hard but very resolute. Then came an all-important third Hotspur goal on 76 Mel McGinness defence splitting ball to Ryan Jones who although under pressure kept his composure to drill past the keeper despite close attention from defender and keeper.
However, Port was back in it on 84 after Hotspur failed to clear the ball following a defensive lapse and Josh Davies rifled home 15 yards. All hands to the pump now and in the last minute of normal time sub Cai Jones was free in front of goal but shot straight at the Hotspur keeper. Full time arrived as Porthmadog may feel they deserved a share of the spoils but none in the Hotspur camp might agree!
