FAMILY AFFAIR EARNS A POINT
Both Mold Alexandra Manager Sean Rogers and Holyhead Hotspur boss Campbell Harrison on reflection would perhaps settle for a point apiece at Alyn Park on Saturday. This from a game which sprang to life in the second half after a first half stalemate.
However, Hotspur were quick out of the blocks in the second half after just five minutes via Mike Kelly, but the hosts responded with interest drawing level through Jack Laird on 63 and the goal scorer turned provider for Ross McDowell to put Alex in the driving seat with fifteen minutes to go. A few minutes later they could have been celebrating a two goal advantage but returning to the starting line-up after numerous weeks out injured central defender Alex Jones headed off the line and the goal saver went to goal taker ten minutes from the end to finish off a Rhys Roberts header and earn his side a point thus adding to fellow family member Kellys earlier strike.
Roberts had almost got on the scoresheet himself just a minute prior to Jones leveller striking the bar while the visitors had to finish the final five minutes without full back Brendun Hogan after somewhat harshly receiving a straight red for violent conduct!
This coming weekend Harrisons men welcome Welsh Cup second round visitors Chirk AAA from the Welsh National League (Wrexham area) to the New Stadium 2.30 pm kick off. Hoping to make it into the third round draw and perhaps meet one of the Welsh Premier clubs at Home!
Hotspur first to show and Alex Jones cross was headed wide by Corey Jones on two. A minute later Jack Laird for Mold produced a good effort but wide. Nip & Tuc but on 14 Tom Murray made a good run from the left and his shot drifted just wide on the far post. The same player for Mold was again involved in good approach work but drove over on 22. At the other end following successive Holyhead corners Kenleigh Owens snapshot was just tipped over by Steve Longgrigg on 29. On the half hour mark John McAulliffe released Laird and with Carl Jones having to come out of goal slipped the ball past the keeper and rolled past the upright. On 33 a free kick by Kenleigh Owen was blocked and rebounded to him and he drove just wide. On 39 Molds Alex Ahmed put a poor pass across his own area reaching Ryan Jones who shot first time but wide. Half Time 0-0
Holyhead on the front foot quickly at start of the second half and the second of two corners on the right by Kenleigh Owen reached a crowded goalmouth the ball eventually coming back to Mike Kelly just inside the box whose shot perhaps aided by a slight deflection crept inside the post (50). Straight down the other end and Daley Wood had a golden chance to get his side back into it quickly but his finish let him down driving wide. Mold were having a lot of the ball but Woods on the right was wasting good positions by poor delivery into the box. Hotspur were looking to add at this stage, Dean Garmey netted with a header but offside. On 63 however, the Alyn Park side were level this time Woods cross was half cleared and Jack Lairds stinging drive seemed to take a couple of deflections before hitting the corner of the net. Molds tails up now in what was turning out to be a good second period and on 75 took the lead, Laird did very well to release sub Ross McDowell who beat off his defenders and from fifteen yards produced a superb curling effort beyond Carl Jones. A minute later it could have been worse sub Andreas Enconmides on the left touch line saw the keeper off his line after clearing danger and his shot was goal bound only for Alex Jones to head away on the line in what turned out to be a defying moment. On 79 a corner on the left by Jamie Roberts saw Rhys Robertss smart header smack against the bar and somehow stay out for another corner same again Roberts again beating the defence with another header and Alex Jones in front of him touched it past the keeper. With five minutes left Hotspur went down to ten men with Brendun Hogans dismissal but 2-2 was perhaps right at full time.
